In addition to the actor, the new version of the cult comedy The War of the Roses will also star Olivia Colman.

In 1989, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner starred as Oliver and Barbara Rose in The War of the Roses, directed by Danny DeVito (who also starred in the film). The dark comedy, which marked the trio’s third collaboration after All for an Emerald and The Jewel of the Nile, was adapted from Warren Adler’s novel about a war between a couple on the verge of divorce.

35 years after its release in theaters, the film is about to get a remake. Director Jay Roach, who has already worked on Getting Into a Bigger Cold and The Scandal, will direct a new version of the cult comedy, written by screenwriter Tony McNamara (Oscar nominee for Poor Creatures and The Favorite) and titled The Roses.

A sequel to The War of the Roses (which was a huge success when it was released in theaters, grossing over $86 million at the US box office and $160 million worldwide) was announced several years ago, but was obviously canceled in favor of a new version.

Renowned actors

In terms of cast, the main roles will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, Attack of the Dogs, for which he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor) and Olivia Colman (who won the Oscar for Best Actress for The Favorite), who will also produce the film.

They will play Theo and Ivy, a couple who seem to have everything going for them: rewarding professional careers, wonderful children and an enviable sex life. But beneath this perfect family facade, there is a real powder keg (based on competition and resentment) ready to catch fire as soon as Theo’s professional dreams fall apart.

In the press release announcing the project, Matthew Greenfield, president of Searchlight, which is producing the film, comments: “The Roses is a wildly funny story, larger than life but deeply human. With Jay at the helm, Benedict, Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team to bring this project to life.”

No filming date has been announced and it is not yet known whether The Roses will be filmed before Jay Roach’s other project: the Ocean’s Eleven prequel, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
