In the midst of the tragedy that hits Rio Grande do Sul and so that a bone marrow transplant could be carried out, involving a patient from Rio Grande do Sul who was waiting for compatibility and a Canadian donor, the Government of Santa Catarina offered the necessary support that included the logistics of SC Transplants and air transport.

Governor Jorginho Mello accompanied, this Tuesday (7), in the hangar of the Santa Catarina Military Fire Department (CBMSC), in Florianópolis, the beginning of the transport of donated bone marrow to the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

I have no doubt that this is another important collaboration from Santa Catarina to our neighbors. It is a delicate transport and that is why we are providing all the support and attention that this transfer requires. The objective is for the marrow to arrive safely and for it to be the hope of a new life for the patient waiting for the transplant. We are sparing no efforts to help the state of Rio Grande do Sul”, said governor Jorginho Mello.

A health professional from São Paulo followed this bone marrow collection process abroad and brought the donation to Brazil on a commercial flight. Upon arriving at Hercílio Luz International Airport, in the early afternoon, the marrow was transported in the SC Transplantes car to the CBMSC hangar.

The Cessna 208B Grand Caravan (Arcanjo 04), registered PR-IAL, from the State Department of Health, was responsible for taking the marrow to the Canoas air base in Rio Grande do Sul, it was already waiting.

From Canoas, the marrow was taken by the Santa Catarina Military Police Eagle (PMSC) to the Army Cavalry Regiment, in Porto Alegre, which was tasked with sending it to the Hospital das Clínicas, where the recipient is located.

SC State Transplant Coordinator, Joel de Andrade, said that the compatible donor was found through an international search. “Bone marrow transplantation can be performed in several ways. In this case, it is an allogeneic transplant, when stem cells are collected from the donor. First a search was carried out right here in the country. As a donor was not found, the search for someone compatible was carried out in international registries. This donor was identified and collection was then carried out. After this procedure, a responsible person transports the marrow to the destination hospital.”, explained the coordinator who highlighted Santa Catarina’s mobilization for this transport and the example of solidarity.

In addition to Governor Jorginho Mello and the coordinator of SC Transplantes, Joel de Andrade, the action was accompanied by the Assistant Secretary of State for Health, Diogo Demarchi Silva, the Secretary of State for Protection and Civil Defense, Fabiano de Souza and the Secretary of State of Communication, João Paulo Vieira.
