The Marechal Dutra dam, known as Gargalheiras, is no longer bleeding. The reservoir, which reached its maximum capacity 36 days ago, no longer has the scenery that brought thousands of tourists to Acari. On Wednesday night (8), only the lowest part of the wall had water running down to the “bleeder”.
The reservoir began bleeding on April 4th. The information about the end of bleeding was confirmed by the Water Management Institute of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (Igarn) this Thursday (9).
After the bleeding period, Gargalheiras had its volume reduced. According to data from Igarn, this Thursday, the reservoir was at 98.94% of its total capacity. Of the 44,421,480 m³, the dam currently accounts for 43,948,659 m³.
The Gargalheiras dam is responsible for supplying the city of Acari and complements the water supply in Currais Novos. Until mid-February, there was an imminent risk of a shortage of treated water in these two locations due to the low volume stored in the reservoirs. On February 15 of this year, Gargalheiras and Dourado together had less than 1 million cubic meters of water, leading the State government, in cooperation with Codevasf (responsible for the works), to advance the construction of section 4-North of the Aductor Seridó to guarantee the supply of 52 thousand inhabitants of the two cities.
