Bahia’s Facial Recognition System was highlighted at the hearing held by the Chamber of Deputies, in Brasília, on Wednesday afternoon (8). The debate was held by the Chamber’s Public Security and Combating Organized Crime Committee.
In addition to members of the Commission, the superintendents of Organizational Technological Management of the SSP, sea and war captain Frederico Vasconcelos, and of Telecommunications, major Moisés Travessa, the monitoring coordinator of the Superintendence of Integrated Management of Police Action, colonel Raimundo Cerqueira, participated in the discussion. , and Colonel PM Marcos Oliveira, responsible for implementing the technology in Bahia.
The analysis of the algorithm, the origin of the tool’s databases and the protocols for reaching fugitives from justice were detailed for federal deputies. The tool is also used to find missing people.
“The algorithm was trained from a sample of the Bahian population through the Pedro Mello Institute’s image bank of 3 million records. To feed the base, we use official images”, explained Colonel Cerqueira. He also recalled that the entire process is mapped from the moment of the alarm until the arrest of the fugitive.
The tool implemented by the Public Security Secretariat of Bahia in December 2018 has already reached 1,566 fugitives from justice. In 2024, technology located 313 wanted people.
“Around 30% of the fugitives were wanted for robbery, 20% for murder, 14% for drug trafficking and 5% for rape”, added Major Travessa.
