The first quarter of 2024 was marked by major advances in healthcare in Santa Catarina. Data from the historical series show that, between January and March of this year, the State set records with 33,157 elective surgeries with hospitalization. Compared to the year 2023, the increase was 28%; Compared to 2022, growth reaches 78%. The increase in the number of procedures was observed in all specialties.

Since the beginning of 2023, the State Government, through the State Department of Health (SES), has structured actions to reduce waiting lists, promoting access from consultations to surgery.

“Our management looks at people. There is nothing more important or more urgent than caring for those in pain and those fighting for their lives. We will remain committed to ensuring that even more people from Santa Catarina undergo the procedures they so desperately need”, says Governor Jorginho Mello.

For the Secretary of State for Health, Carmen Zanotto, the results of this work have been observed in the expansion of access. “At the end of last year, we launched two important actions as guided by governor Jorginho Mello: the Hospital Valorization Program and the Santa Catarina Table of elective surgeries. The numbers show how important these actions are; We are ensuring that hospitals receive the amounts consistent with the procedures. Furthermore, we guarantee the sustainability of these units and ensure that surgeries are carried out. With this, we are moving towards our objective, which is to bring quality of life to the people of Santa Catarina”, highlights Carmen Zanotto.

The expansion can be observed in different specialties. In orthopedic surgeries, which are considered the Secretariat’s biggest challenge, the strategy adopted was the expansion of providers, in addition to differentiated payment for procedures, reaching up to 12 times paid by the SUS Table. Since 2023, 13 new hospitals have been authorized by the State to carry out High Complexity Orthopedic procedures.

The numbers are increasing. In the first quarter of 2022, there were 2,040 orthopedic surgeries, in 2023 there were 2,852 procedures, and now, in 2024, there were 4,091.

Priority to cancer patients

In oncology, new actions were also adopted, including the prioritization of cancer patients. They were removed from the elective surgery list and listed as time-sensitive patients. In this way, it was possible to increase from 2,722 surgeries, in the first three months of 2022, to 3,823, in the same period of 2024.

With this prioritization, more than 80% of cancer patients have undergone surgery within 60 days, as provided for in legislation. There are 20 hospitals in the State qualified to carry out the procedure.

For actions to reduce queues, R$479 million were invested in 2023 and, the projection for 2024, is R$650.2 million in fixed incentives.
