Petrobras’ management should present its first proposals for investment in renewable energy to the board of directors in the coming weeks, said the company’s president, Jean Paul Prates, this Tuesday (7).
According to him, negotiations with possible partners are already advanced, with talks about purchasing a stake or isolated projects. The names of the partners, however, were not revealed.
The state-owned company’s return to renewable energy is one of the focuses of current management. Initially, the idea is to enter into onshore solar or wind energy projects. Wind energy at sea still depends on regulation in the country.
The company has set aside US$11.5 billion in its strategic planning for low-carbon investments, which include reducing emissions in its current operations and resuming renewable activities.
The exit from clean energy projects was decided during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, which wanted a leaner Petrobras with a focus on pre-salt oil production.

Prates stated that other company initiatives in this regard depend on progress in legislation. Congress is discussing laws that affect the biofuels and offshore energy generation markets.
The state-owned company has a pilot offshore wind project, which will be installed in Rio Grande do Norte, but still on a small scale.
Following the acquisition of the first solar or wind generation projects, Petrobras intends to integrate them with hydrogen production initiatives, a product of which Petrobras is a large consumer.
