The rain tragedies in Rio Grande do Sul have caused 95 deaths so far, with four cases being assessed. Governor Eduardo Leite confirmed that 131 people are missing. At least 401 cities were affected, which represents 80.6% of the total of 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul.
In a press interview this Tuesday (7), the governor classified the situation as a “catastrophe”. Additionally, 48,799 people have left their homes and are in shelters.
However, the government counts a total of 159,036 citizens as homeless. The disaster has so far left 1.4 million people affected by the disaster. Rio Grande do Sul has 10.8 million inhabitants, according to the 2022 IBGE census.
“The size of the crisis in Rio Grande do Sul is what especially makes this situation difficult for us to deal with. Practically the entire state is affected in some way”, lamented the governor.
He said the numbers are rising every day, but that the data may be “inaccurate.”
Temperature drop
The forecast is for temperatures to drop from the night of Wednesday (8) and Thursday (9) with heavy rain expected in the south of the state.
“There is a first projection that, between Friday and Sunday, we will experience very heavy rains again in the northern half of the state, affecting the rivers that have already risen and which have already caused all this damage,” said the governor.
The governor asks that people not return to their homes yet, as there is a risk of new flooding.
