Open III Judiciary Week to Prevent and Combat Harassment in Tocantins

-

Empathy and respect! These were the words reinforced by the president of the Court of Justice of the State of Tocantins (TJTO) and president of the Gender and Racial Equity Management Commission, judge Etelvina Maria Sampaio Felipe, in her speech at the solemn opening of the III Judiciary Week of Prevention and Confronting Harassment and Discrimination in all its forms, on Monday (6/5). The initiative of the Superior School of the Judiciary of Tocantins (Esmat), takes place until Friday (10/5), in the TJTO auditorium.

“It is an agenda of great relevance, especially in labor relations. A work environment cultivated in empathy, dialogue and respect improves the quality of life for all of us. A harmonious environment, free from pressure, conflicts and problems and for this communication is essential. Only in recent years have we started discussing issues of harassment and racism. I think we are working to achieve this work environment with significant changes. This new reality brought about by new technologies has demanded many of us, and in order to continue with our jurisdictional provision, we still need to have a good work environment that is made up of people and their diversity and requires a good interpersonal relationship”, he stated.

Guided by Resolution no. 351/2020 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the Week aims to prevent and mitigate the damage caused by harassment in the Judiciary, carried out by any means, regardless of connection. The president of the Commission for Preventing and Combating Moral and Sexual Harassment and 2nd Degree Discrimination (Cassedio2), judge Ângela Issa Haonat, recalled that at the moment all courts across the country are debating ways to prevent and combat discrimination and harassment.

“The topic is of the utmost relevance and we are all learning. Discrimination cannot be trivialized, that’s why we are here. We can’t help but think. What unites us is sensitivity, courage, attitudes that strengthen the reversion to harassment. We need to speak, listen, act and transform. We need to reflect and question our actions, especially work relationships. Disagree without arguing, promote non-violent communication. Improve reporting channels. May we have a prosperous week in confronting all types of discrimination,” he declared.

Mimimi is someone else’s pain

After the official opening, participants enjoyed the conversation “The question of gender with a racial perspective”, with judge Renata do Nascimento e Silva and journalist Maju Cotrim, mediated by judge Flávia Afini Bovo, president of the Prevention Commission and Combating Moral and Sexual Harassment and 1st Degree Discrimination (Cassedio1), and table coordination by the server of the Coordination of Socio-Environmental Management and Social Responsibility (Cogersa), Leila Jardim.

“Racism is about all of us. It’s not a black thing, a black thing. Racism is a societal thing, it is a social issue. It’s for you to discuss at home with your child, it’s for you to discuss at school, it’s for you to discuss at work. Because even if it’s not a black family, your child may have a black friend and he will have to know how to deal with this difference. Talk about the subject, the cause is social”, said Maju Cotrim.

During the conversation, the journalist also presented the denial of her identity in childhood, such as straightening her hair, cases of racism she has already experienced and the process of strengthening her self-esteem.

Judge Renata do Nascimento e Silva said that she saw herself in the journalist’s speech, on the issue of straightening her hair, as she had Xuxa as an idol when she was a child and wanted straight hair like hers, and saw on her mother’s face the expression of that it wouldn’t be possible, even if she did the opposite and tried to achieve the perfect smoothness. “This and so many other stories, as well as my ability to act as a judge,” she said.

“Mimimi is someone else’s pain. The pain of others, because you do not delegitimize your pain. Your pain must be respected. What’s behind that line: ‘You’re so cute, stop being cool, black people are in fashion!’ How fashionable is it? We need to reflect on these issues. It is important that we do not disqualify the pain of others. Hence the importance of events like these, hence the need to be here, to talk about it. Furthermore, there is a need for institutions to represent the ethnic-racial diversity of their people”, said the judge.

Presentation of the Commissions

During the event, the members of the two Commissions for Preventing and Combating Harassment and Discrimination, both 1st and 2nd degree, were presented. The actions developed so far by the committees were also presented by the intern of the People Management Department, Maria Clara Rezende.

Reporting channels

With a view to combating the practice of any abuse against civil servants, male and female judges and collaborators of any kind, the president of the TJTO, judge Etelvina Maria Sampaio Felipe, also highlighted the importance of not remaining silent and reporting.

“It is essential to guarantee reporting mechanisms. We have several channels for this, including the Ombudsman’s Office, the Internal Affairs Department, the PAHS. May everyone be an active agent in this prevention practice, in order to create a culture of respect. Our goal is to eliminate the practice of abusive conduct. And may the Week be an opportunity to reinforce the appreciation of human beings”, reinforced President Etelvina.

Recently created, the Program for the Protection, Humanized and Solidary Reception of Women in the Judiciary of Tocantins (PAHS) is an initiative that aims to prevent and combat domestic and family violence committed against female judges and employees of the Judiciary of the State of Tocantins.
