The Government of Paraíba, through the State Department of Education, signed an agreement with the State Department of Traffic of Paraíba (Detran-PB), this Monday (06), in the Acadepol auditorium, at PB-008. The partnership aims to develop educational and cultural actions in accordance with the “Paraíba for peace in traffic” project.

The signing of the document took place during the opening ceremony of the Yellow May Movement in the state, a global campaign that aims to alert the population about the large number of victims of accidents on roads and highways. This year’s theme is “Peace in traffic starts with you!”

The Technical Cooperation Agreement establishes guidelines to direct efforts towards the operational viability of the proposed program or project, to be developed in the state public education network. In addition to ensuring proper training by Detran, for pedagogues, of whom they will be the multipliers, linked to the State Department of Education, as well as providing them with material, manuals and all the necessary instruments to ensure that pedagogical teaching is applied desired

The Secretary of Education of Paraíba, Roberto Souza, detailed that there is already a partnership between Education and Detran, through the Desafio Nota Mil program, through which students prepare for the National High School Exam (Enem) by producing essays on the topic. .

“Now we are expanding this partnership and Detran will be able to provide training for our pedagogical coordinators, we can take theater plays to work on the topic in schools. Traffic education is a mandatory topic in schools, but it is treated transversally, that is, across different disciplines. Therefore, closing partnerships with Detran and PRF is essential, as they bring all the knowledge in this area”, said Roberto.

According to the governor of Paraíba, João Azevêdo, in 2023, the state had 11,230 traffic accidents, of which 930 involved cars, 789 bicycles, 22 buses, 872 being run over and 8,617 involving motorcycles. In other words, 77% of accidents in Paraíba involved motorcycles. This year, in the first few months, the number of accidents involving motorcycles is already at 79%.

According to the governor, it is necessary to take the data seriously and highlighted the importance of traffic education starting in schools.

“We need to understand that the training of a good driver starts at school, which is why we are creating this partnership with the Department of Education, which is stronger so that we have more responsible drivers. These actions will result in better data in the future, but we also need to expand our inspection actions.”

The event also featured the lecture “Safe Traffic: A Challenge for Many”, given by the Director of Operations at Detran-PB, Roberta Neiva. For her, education is the key to transforming traffic.

“This partnership will allow us to have several actions from Detran and the Department of Education and in the future we intend to have the driver training course take place at the Department of Education. We have a program of actions according to the age group of each student, as we have to work on raising awareness, for young people to buy their motorcycle, for example, but be responsible for wearing a helmet and obeying traffic rules”, he concluded.
