Salgado Filho International Airport, in Porto Alegre, will remain closed indefinitely, with all operations suspended. The information was confirmed this Monday (6) by the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear), through a note. “There is no forecast for resumption. “Abear members canceled flights to and/or from Porto Alegre and relaxed rescheduling and refund rules. Passengers must contact the airline to reschedule or refund tickets to and/or from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul,” the statement added.

Also according to the association, the airports in the cities of Passo Fundo, Caxias do Sul, Pelotas and Santo Ângelo in Rio Grande do Sul are operating, but may be impacted by the weather conditions recorded throughout the state. Rio Grande do Sul has been hit hard by storms over the last few days.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) published, this Monday morning, a red level warning that indicates great danger due to the intense rains that hit, above all, the southeast region of Rio Grande do Sul. The alert is valid until 12 pm this Tuesday (7).

According to the forecast, rainfall could reach 100 millimeters (mm) per day and winds could reach 100 kilometers per hour (km/h). Inmet also predicts hail, a high risk of damage to buildings, electricity cuts, damage to plantations, falling trees, flooding and disruption to road transport.

The municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul that may be most affected are: Santa Vitória do Palmar; Big River; Pedras Altas, Jaguarão, Herval, Chuí and Arroio Grande.
