IFB suspends classes due to technical incapacity this Monday (6/5)

Of the 10 campuses of the Federal Institute of Brasília (IFB), only four had joined the strike declared in April by technical-administrative and teaching staff

The Superior Council of the Federal Institute of Brasília (IFB) unanimously approved, this Monday (6/5), the temporary suspension of the remaining classes on campuses that had not adhered to the server strike, due to technical incapacity. Among the 10 campuses, four had activities completely suspended and six were partially paralyzed.

The dean of the IFB, Veruska Machado, highlights that the decision was to suspend the remaining classes, without interfering with the semester’s academic calendar: “We decided to temporarily suspend activities, not suspend the semester. It will only end a little later, because of today’s decision.”

The strike at the Institute has now extended for 33 days, starting on April 3rd. Demands include salary adjustment and restructuring of the careers of technical-administrative employees in education (TAE) and basic technical and technological education (EBTT). For Paulo Cabral, professor of the agroecology technology course at IFB and advisor at the meeting, the agenda is “fair, necessary and legal”.

The professor highlights that the emptying of campuses with the strike and disagreements about the suspension of activities cause insecurities, such as vandalism and inappropriate practices by students in the institution’s spaces, in addition to animosity between employees. For him, students will be harmed when they return to activities: “There will be serious problems when classes are replaced, including financial ones, for students who are going to classes and will have to attend them again, when the calendar returns to normal”.

Paula Dutra, also a counselor and professor at IFB, points out that, although some teachers choose to break the strike, “there are students with specific needs who are helpless at this moment, such as autistic students, who need predictability”.

She also argues that continuing to operate, even with the shutdown of servers, “gives a very bad image to society, which is at odds with what we are fighting for, which is the search for more servers, to guarantee smooth operation, without work overload.” Professor Lucas Lira adds: “If there is no technical support, there is no way to maintain the activities”.
