Brazil reached 216 Olympic places at the Paris Games this weekend after qualifying in the 4x400m athletics relay and beach volleyball. In Bahamas, in the World Relay Championship, the country secured its place by winning the repechage with sprinters from the new generation: Lucas Carvalho, Lucas Vilas, Vitor Hugo Miranda and Matheus Lima. In beach volleyball, experience made the difference: the duo Evandro and Arthur Lanci took the country’s fourth and final spot in the sport by winning the title in the Brasília stage (elite 16) of the world circuit.
In Bahamas, Brazil started the repechage heat well with Lucas Carvalho, followed by Lucas Vilas. Both maintained the lead until the baton was handed over to Vitor de Miranda, who lost pace but managed to regain the lead to hand the baton to Matheus Lima. The last of the quartet, the 20-year-old from Ceará finished the race in first place, guaranteeing his place in Paris. The other five places in the World Cup went to the United States (also in the repechage), Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, Poland and India.
As there was no classification in the 4×100 (women’s and men’s) and 4x400m (women’s and mixed) relay events, Brazil will have to wait for the world rankings to close on June 30, to find out whether or not they will go to Paris.
