Rains in RS: Salgado Filho Airport, in Porto Alegre, will be closed indefinitely

Porto Alegre International Airport (Salgado Filho) will be closed, with all operations suspended, for an indefinite period. This is what the Fraport Brasil note issued this Monday morning (6) reported.

Therefore, flights to and from the capital were canceled and, according to the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR), the rules for rescheduling were relaxed.

Also according to the statement, the airports in the cities of Passo Fundo, Caxias do Sul, Pelotas and Santo Ângelo are operating, but may be impacted by weather conditions in the state.

“Fraport Brasil informs that operations at Porto Alegre Airport remain suspended for an indefinite period. We remain in contact with Civil Defense, authorities and airlines to monitor and assess the situation. There is no forecast for resumption.
For everyone’s safety, the Passenger Terminal is closed, with no passengers present. Only the teams necessary for the security and management of the airport site remain.
We ask passengers to contact their airline for more information about their flights.”

The disaster in Rio Grande do Sul has left, to date, 83 dead and 111 missing, reported Civil Defense. There are 276 injured, 121,957 homeless, 19,368 in shelters and 850,422 affected in the 345 municipalities affected.

The regions most affected by the rains in RS are: Central, Vale do Rio Pardo, Metropolitana, Serra Gaúcha and Vale do Taquari. Almost 1 million people are without water and 424,000 without electricity.

According to authorities, homeless and displaced people who were welcomed by Civil Defense need not only food, but also mattresses, bed and bath linen and blankets. Anyone who lives in the Porto Alegre region can contribute in person at the State Civil Defense Logistics Center (Avenida Joaquim Porto Villanova, 101, Jardim Carvalho neighborhood, Porto Alegre).
