For the first time in history, BYD sold more than 7 thousand light vehicles in Brazil. As a result, the Chinese automaker maintained 10th place in the ranking and is already threatening the positions of Honda (8th place) and Nissan (9th).
BYD is betting on hybrid and electric cars, while Nissan and Honda still focus on the flex combustion engine. Interestingly, two years ago Nissan was the electric car market leader with the Leaf, but decided to change its focus. In the case of Honda, hybrid models are very expensive and have little volume.
The numbers were released by Fenabrave and show Fiat in 1st place with 42.1 thousand sales (20.2% of the market). Volkswagen came in 2nd with 33.4 thousand registrations (16.1%) and Chevrolet ended April in 3rd place with 29.8 thousand registrations (14.3%).
Interestingly, in a press release, BYD announced a lower sales figure (6,965 units), ignoring its own registrations in the light commercial segment. But this has a reason: when considering only the passenger car ranking, BYD rises to 9th place.
The official ranking, including pickup trucks and medium and small SUVs, puts BYD in 10th place. Another noteworthy fact is the growth of Caoa Chery, also selling Chinese cars, in 11th place. See Fenabrave’s ranking below with April sales.
