The Brazilian Navy reported this Monday (6) that will send the largest warship in Latin America to help the population of Rio Grande do Sul. The objective is to help rescue stranded victims and transport supplies through flooded roads.

According to the Navy, the “Multipurpose Aircraft Ship (NAM) ‘Atlântico'”, the Flagship of the Brazilian Squadron, will leave the Rio de Janeiro Naval Base this Wednesday (8) heading to the city of Rio Grande, on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul.

The ship will carry eight medium and small vessels and two mobile water treatment stations. On April 30, the Navy sent eight speedboats to Rio Grande do Sul.

The Navy also announced the sending of 40 vehicles and 200 soldiers to work on clearing access roads, in addition to health support teams made up of doctors and nurses.

This Tuesday (7), three Navy aircraft will be deployed to Rio Grande do Sul. The following day — the same day that the “Atlântico” will be relocated — another vessel will send donations to the state.

According to the state’s Civil Defense, there are 201,500 people away from home. Of this total, 47.6 thousand are in shelters and 153.8 thousand are homeless (people staying with family or friends).

Rio Grande do Sul has 385 of its 497 municipalities with some report of problems related to the storm, with 1.178 million people affected.

The forecast of rain from the middle of this week in areas already hit by storms puts the state on alert again. Images taken by the Amazônia 1 satellite, operated by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), and obtained exclusively by g1 show a scaled view of the before and after of the biggest tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.

The mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo (MDB), for example, decreed water rationing in the city. With the shutdown of a treatment plant this Monday afternoon, around 85% of the population is without water supply from the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae).
