In April this year, Manaus recorded 49 homicides, which is equivalent to a 41% reduction in the number of crimes like these occurring in the capital compared to the same period last year, when there were 83 crimes. The data are from the State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP-AM).
In Amazonas, the reduction achieved in Manaus represents a drop of 29% as a whole, during the same period.
“In the first quarter, Amazonas had a 6.9% reduction in the homicide rate and now, we close the month of April with a very good number. In the capital we had a 41% reduction in the homicide rate and in the State of Amazonas, a 29% reduction in the month of April. The four-month period will close at around 13%, a spectacular number”, stated the secretary of the SSP, Colonel Vinícius Almeida.
Therefore, the 41% reduction in the number of homicides is greater than the sum of the previous three months, which also showed a drop.
In the first three months of this year, 156 homicide cases were registered in Manaus. Of this total, 121 murders (78%) were related to drug trafficking, according to data from the Integrated Center for Public Security Statistics (Ciesp).
Of this total, 99 people were victims of firearms. The numbers also indicate that 86 of them either had been in the prison system or had police reports registered against them.
The survey also points out that 16% of victims were not necessarily linked to criminal practices. However, they were involved in some type of specific interpersonal conflict, whether with family members or strangers.
The remaining 6% remains under investigation by the Civil Police of Amazonas (PC-AM) to identify the motivation for the crimes.
