The Artisanal Mullet Fishing season began throughout Santa Catarina on Wednesday, the 1st, and continues until the 31st of July. In an interview with Rádio Menina, this Thursday, 2nd, the president of the Santa Catarina Beach Drag Association, Claudinei Lopes, explained some questions about the harvest.

This year, as in 2023, the geographic coordinates for artisanal fishing will be drawn up by the State Government’s Military Environmental Police. “They are issuing a letter renewing last year’s licenses for the year 2024, that is, all those vessels that obtained the license with the geographic coordinates of 2023 are able to work this year”, explains Lopes.

The president informed that if the Environmental PM carries out inspections on the beaches, the fisherman must show the Federal Environmental License, which is valid until 2027, along with the license issued in 2023, with the geographic coordinates.

Fishing quotas for 2024

According to Lopes, the number of fishing quotas was once again not as expected, despite many meetings between the state’s Secretariat of Aquaculture and Fisheries, the Fisheries Federation and fishing colonies.

“At first it only increased by 100 tons with the ringed net, and thank God, we had a return to industrial fishing with 480 tons. This value is the minimum, nowadays, sometimes it’s not even worth it. With the expense of food, fuel, equipment and men for each industrial boat to take around 50 tons it is practically unfeasible, they will barely make a profit. But it’s less bad that this amount has returned”, points out the director.

Fishing quotas are created so that fishing stocks can recover. In Santa Catarina, the quota is what is left over from fishing in Rio Grande do Sul. States like São Paulo, Paraná and Rio de Janeiro do not have this control.

According to Lopes, this lack of control is not correct. “We have already questioned this and we were told that Santa Catarina is the largest fishing hub in Brazil. We are paying for being competent, today we are the only state that uses banded nets and this is a competence of Santa Catarina fishermen, in other words, we are punished for being competent and for wanting to work, this situation is complicated”, he concludes.

License to fish

The fishing license is currently the fisherman’s official document to be able to work. There are reports that it takes an average of a year and a half to issue the document. “How are we going to encourage a country that needs to work, needs to produce and generate jobs? A lot of people want to fish, but struggle with their fishing license. So this is a serious problem and has to be corrected”, criticizes Lopes.
