The Bom Futuro National Forest, in Rondônia, with 17 thousand hectares deforested, and Gleba João Bento, with almost 56 thousand hectares of accumulated deforestation in the states of Rondônia and Amazonas, will be granted to the private sector for restoration and generation of carbon credits . The two public conservation units will be the first to participate in an initiative to recover native vegetation and sustainable management of public forests in the Amazon.ebc.gif?id=1593383&o=node

The concession model is the result of a technical cooperation agreement between the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) signed this Friday (3), at the Ministry of the Environment, in Brasília. The partnership will have US$800,000 made available by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in non-refundable resources from the Green Climate Fund, an international initiative to combat climate change.

In addition to federal units, concession projects in the states will also be supported. The director of Project Planning and Structuring at BNDES, Nelson Barbosa, stated during the ceremony that R$30 million will be invested in studies for concession projects in the Amazon.

“We will make available to the government and the populations of the areas, what the results of the studies are, what the investments are, what the revenue is, how many jobs will be generated and what the profitability and attractiveness is for those who will invest”, he said.

The studies will present proposals for state public forest concessions, which need to involve the recovery of native vegetation, but also provide for financial return to investments in environmental management proposals according to the needs of each area.

According to SFB, the target for federal public forest concessions, by 2026, is 4 million hectares, which should be included in projects proposed by the private sector for recovery and sustainable forest management. According to the institution, the forecast is that these initiatives will generate 25 thousand jobs and R$60 million per year in income in the municipalities reached.
