The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Federal Audit Court (MPTCU) requested an investigation into possible diversions of emergency resources released to prevent climate tragedies in Rio Grande do Sul.
In representation with request for precautionary measure, this Friday, 3rd, deputy attorney Lucas Rocha Furtado states that “there are strong indications that investments in preventing tragedies such as the one currently experienced in RS or the recent flood in Vale do Taquari, also in RS, they have not been carried out by the State”.
Furtado also mentions researchers from Rio Grande do Sul who point out deficiencies in issuing disaster forecasts.
According to the prosecutor, “along with the low budgetary execution of federal resources destined to combat natural disasters, it may be that member states and municipalities are not making adequate and regular use of the financial transfers allocated to them for works and services”.
In addition to the investigation request, Furtado requests the creation of a TCU task force with other state and municipal audit courts to verify “the effectiveness of the use given to public resources allocated to States normally afflicted by environmental tragedies”.
He also asks for verification of the existence of amendments to the budget for the climate emergency in Rio Grande do Sul and wants to check “to what extent the reduction of the environmental preservation area dedicated to agriculture may have had an impact on the tragic situation in RS” .
