The number of cases of “Oropouche Fever” registered in Bahia rose to 307. The data was detailed in a new assessment of the disease released this Friday (3) by the state Health Department (Sesab).

The cities of Teolândia and Gandu are the cities with the most records of the disease, with 46 cases each. Taperoá, Amargosa and Igrapiúna come next, with 32, 27 and 25 cases, respectively.

What is ‘Oropouche Fever’

According to information from the Ministry of Health, “Oropouche Fever” is a viral disease transmitted in the urban environment by Culicoides paraensis, known as maruim or sandfly. To date, there are no records of direct transmission between people.

Symptoms of ‘Oropouche Fever’

According to the health entity, the main symptoms are:

  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

The symptoms are very similar to those of dengue and chikungunya. Therefore, it is important to stay alert and seek a healthcare facility. In the case of fever, symptoms generally last from 2 to 7 days and do not usually leave any consequences.

In more serious cases, recovery time increases. To date, there are no records of deaths associated with virus infection in Brazil, according to the Ministry of Health.

Treatments

There is no specific treatment for “Oropouche Fever”. Only clinical management focused on symptom relief is recommended. The Bahia Health Department (Sesab) reinforces the importance of laboratory diagnosis for effective monitoring of cases and highlights epidemiological surveillance actions to monitor the situation.

Prevention Measures

  • Avoid areas with lots of mosquitoes
  • Wear clothing that covers most of the body
  • Apply repellent to exposed areas of the body
  • Keep the house clean
  • Remove possible mosquito breeding sites, such as standing water and accumulated leaves
  • The Ministry of Health also recommends that, if there are confirmed cases in your region, you must follow the guidance of local health authorities to reduce the risk of transmission.
