Santa Catarina confirms first death due to storms and goes on alert

In addition to Rio Grande do Sul, the strong storms also wreaked havoc in Santa Catarina, mainly in the west and south of the state.

The first death caused by rain in the state was a 61-year-old man, confirmed this Friday (3). He was missing after his car was swept away by floodwaters in the city of Ipira. According to witnesses, the man tried to cross a small bridge when he was carried away by the current.

In Passos Maia, also in the west of Santa Catarina, the formation of a tornado was confirmed, which destroyed the eucalyptus trees.

In Capinzal, a crater formed and swallowed an establishment in the city center.

This Friday morning, five abandoned dogs were rescued in Chapecó.

The south of Santa Catarina was also badly hit. The cities of Araranguá, Praia Grande and São João do Sul declared an emergency due to flooding in houses, streets and roads.

In total, 33 municipalities recorded occurrences of flooding. Most of them are in regions that border Rio Grande do Sul. Therefore, these cities remain on alert.

According to Civil Defense, Santa Catarina has 155 homeless people, who have lost their homes and are staying with friends or relatives, and 26 homeless people, who are in places provided by the public authorities.
