President Lula (PT) became the target of criticism on social media for talking about football when he arrived in Rio Grande do Sul, this Thursday (3). The state is experiencing a tragedy caused by the heavy rains of recent days.

According to data released by Civil Defense and city halls, 32 deaths have already been confirmed in the state. Another 74 people remain missing. There are still 7,165 people in shelters and another 17,087 homeless and 56 injured in 235 affected municipalities.

Lula was in Rio Grande do Sul this Thursday to meet with the governor, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), who had been publicly demanding the president on social media.

When greeting the press after disembarking, Lula told journalists that he is “supporting Grêmio and Internacional”, in reference to the two main teams in the state. The moment was recorded on video circulating on social media.

When commenting on the case, federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) classified the PT member’s speech as “surreal”.

“This goes beyond those who like Lula or not, those on the right, those who are Bolsonaro. This is perhaps the most stupid thing Lula has done in recent years. Basically, people are dying in despair in Rio Grande do Sul and when the guy arrives at the scene, he says this”, said the deputy on his social networks.

“In the midst of the greatest tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul, Lula, passing through the state, expresses his concern about Inter and Grêmio. The people of Rio Grande do Sul certainly do not deserve such disregard from the president. Oops, it’s Lula, no surprise. Let there be misfortune”, said deputy Bia Kicis (PL-SP).

In addition to parliamentarians, several social media profiles are criticizing the president because of the statement.

When dealing with the tragedy in RS, the chief minister of the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (Secom), Paulo Pimenta, classified the situation as the “biggest meteorological catastrophe in the history” of the state.
