Fire leaves two dead in guesthouse in Asa Sul

-

A fire in the early hours of this Friday (3/4) in an inn on 705 South left two people dead. One of the victims died at the scene and the other after being taken to the hospital in critical condition — the man was unconscious with suspected severe poisoning due to smoke inhalation and burns to his body and could not resist his injuries.

According to the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF), the suspect responsible for causing the fire was arrested and taken to the 1st Police Station. The man was at the scene when the agents arrived and stated that the cause of the fire was his cell phone catching fire on the mattress he was sleeping on in a room at the inn.

The Federal District Military Fire Department (CBMDF) was called for help at 0:03 am this Friday and seven vehicles were involved.

The building has 22 housing units, 13 of which are in the basement, 10 on the ground floor and nine on the first floor. Reports from residents heard at the scene state that 22 people were there at the time of the fire. Some were unable to leave the building, like the two victims, who were two adult men. The two were found in different bathrooms in the building.

On Friday morning, the Mail was at the scene and found traces of flames on the windows and pipes on the first floor. There was also a smell of smoke in the area and yellow banners prevented entry to the building, indicating that it was a place where a crime had occurred.

There is no sign indicating that the place is an inn, but the Fire Department confirms the building’s functionality to house people. There are four large windows at the back with bars, which may have made it difficult for guests to leave.

After controlling the flames, firefighters began the aftermath operation to eliminate the risk of the flames returning. According to the corporation, most units were partially or completely consumed by the flames, with the loss of mattresses, clothes and other objects.
