With the aim of stimulating the growth in the number of organ donors in the State, the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam) approved Law No. 6,830/2024, establishing guidelines for the creation of the Diabetic Reference Center (CRD). The new legislation is one of 28 laws sanctioned by the State Executive Branch in April.

Authored by deputy Dr. Mayara Pinheiro Reis (Republicans), Law No. 6,830/2024 determines, among some points, that the CRD will carry out, free of charge, diabetes prevention and control exams, such as blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, post blood glucose -prandial, fructosamine, as well as glucose tolerance test. In addition to offering multidisciplinary care from psychology, physiotherapy, neurology, nursing, social services, doctors and nutritionists, as well as free metabolic surgeries for type 2 diabetes.

In Amazonas, there are currently more than 185 thousand people living with diabetes. Of this total, the majority (61.72%) are in the capital, Manaus, where the number of diabetics exceeds 114 thousand, according to data from the State Department of Health of Amazonas (SES-AM).

“This scenario reinforces the importance of creating the CRD with a view to providing access to the portion of the population that today has little or no guidance on how to deal with a chronic disease that kills more than one and a half million people per year in the world” points out the Dr. Mayara.

Another law sanctioned by the state government is nº 6,845/2024, by deputy Rozenha (PMB). The legislation establishes the Organ, Tissue and Transplant Donation Awareness Week in the public school program.

The text establishes that awareness of the importance of organ donation be addressed in lectures and seminars, which must be conducted by professionals specialized in the topic.

The content covered must respect, where applicable, the age limits of primary and secondary school students, in accordance with the National and State Education Plan and current legislation.

“The law aims to create within the Amazonian community a concept free from ideological, religious and prejudiced ties, in addition to seeking scientific, humanitarian, social and, why not, economic knowledge, since public health is a topic of great importance. cost for everyone’, points out Rozenha.

The parliamentarian is the author of another law also sanctioned last month, No. 6,829/2024, which prohibits the appointment of those convicted of crimes of racism or racial insults.

“The public administration must adopt measures to combat the commission of these crimes, and cannot condone the appointment of people who have already been convicted of crimes of this nature” states the parliamentarian.
