30 days after the launch of the Electronic Authorization for Organ Donation (AEDO), made available by the Pernambuco Notary Offices in partnership with the Judiciary, more than 80 people have already completed the procedure of expressing and formalizing their wishes through a document official, done online at a Notary Office directly through the official national platform website www.aedo.org.br.

According to data collected by the Colégio Notarial do Brasil – Conselho Federal (CNB/CF), an entity that brings together the 8,344 Brazilian Notary Offices, 84 requests have already been made in the State. Nationally, there have been more than 4,570 requests in all 27 federative units of the country by May 1st.

“In the inaugural month of the launch of the Electronic Authorization for Organ Donation (AEDO), offered by the Notary Offices of Pernambuco, we can already witness the tangible benefits that this initiative brings to our society”, highlights Dayse Nunes, president of CNB/PE. “From simplifying bureaucratic procedures to raising awareness about the importance of organ donation, this platform not only facilitates, but also cultivates an atmosphere of solidarity and hope among the citizens of Pernambuco”, he adds.

Regulated by Provision nº 164/2024 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), and available free of charge to the entire population, the AEDO made in a notary’s office can be consulted, via the deceased’s CPF, by those responsible for the National Transplant System, of the Ministry of Health directly at the National Organ Donor Center. The initiative, which seeks to help the more than 2 thousand people who are currently waiting in line for an organ transplant in the state, can be requested digitally at any of the Notary’s Offices in Pernambuco.

To carry out the Electronic Authorization for Organ Donation, the interested party fills out a form directly on the website www.aedo.org.br, which is received by the selected Notary’s Office. The notary then schedules a videoconference session to identify the interested party and collect their expression of will. Finally, the citizen and the notary digitally sign the AEDO, which is available for consultation by those responsible for the National Transplant System. The platform is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from any device with internet access.

On the platform, citizens can also choose which organ they want to donate – bone marrow, intestine, kidney, lung, liver, cornea, heart or all –. In Brazil, the majority of people on the national transplant queue are waiting to donate a kidney, followed by liver, heart, lung and pancreas (11). Last year alone, three thousand people died due to the lack of organ donation. Currently, more than 500 children are waiting for a new organ.

Under current legislation, the person who authorizes donation in the case of brain death is the citizen’s family, who needed to be aware of the person’s intention to donate their organs and/or tissues. With AEDO, this expression of will is recorded within a database accessed by health professionals, who to haveProof of the deceased’s wishes is on hand to present to the family at the time of death.

The e-Notary

The process of issuing the Electronic Organ Donation Authorization is carried out through the e-Notary platform, a national digital environment for carrying out notarial acts. Anyone interested in donating organs should access the website www.aedo.org.br and request your Notarized Digital Certificate, an electronic signature that will ensure the identity of the applicant. After submitting the request, the notary selected by the citizen will contact you to hold a video conference to issue the Certificate.

Once issued, the future donor must fill out the form on the website’s home page with their details and indicate which organs they would like to donate. After completing the form, the citizen will select the Notary Office that will issue the AEDO and sign the document with their Notarized Digital Certificate, installed on their cell phone.

The document will be generated automatically and will be integrated into the Organ Donor Center immediately. The citizen will then be able to inform their family of the existence of the document to facilitate future searches. The document can be revoked at any time by the applicant.
