The population’s biggest fear, the collapse of a dam, has already started to happen. On Thursday afternoon (2), the state government reported that the 14 de Julho dam, between Cotiporã and Bento Gonçalves, had already partially failed.
The collapse of the dam could quickly worsen the destruction scenario, with a sudden increase in the level of the Taquari and Antas rivers. Families in the region, including Laura’s, have been waiting for rescue for days. This Thursday, after the rupture, Civil Defense reported that it is “removing families from risk areas that still remained in these locations”, but families report that no helicopters have arrived so far.
