The government of Minas Gerais will send support teams to Rio Grande do Sul to provide assistance in search and rescue efforts for victims of floods caused by the recent rains that hit the state.

To date, the state has recorded 24 victims as a result of the storms. Civil Defense reports 13 deaths, while the Fire Department and Military Brigade (BM) confirm another 11 deaths.

Members of the Minas Gerais Fire Department (CBMMG), the State Civil Defense Coordination (Cedec-MG) and the Health Department (SES-MG) will be sent.

On Wednesday (1/5), two Civil Defense professionals from Minas Gerais already traveled to the state to begin the first work.

After strong storms in the region, 21 people remain missing. In total, 147 cities recorded disruptions, such as floods, falling barriers and landslides. The most affected areas are the Central, Vales, Serra and Metropolitan regions of Porto Alegre.

According to the Civil Defense bulletin, 67,800 people were affected by the effects of the bad weather. There are 14,500 homeless residents. Of these, 4,599 are in shelters, while 9,993 are in the homes of family or friends.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) maintains a red alert over part of RS until 3pm this Thursday. The weather forecast indicates heavy rain, with hail, intense winds and electrical discharges.

Federal government

Lula went to Rio Grande do Sul to monitor the situation after the heavy rains. The President of the Republic disembarked in Santa Maria in the morning. “Our government is ready to work together with the state government”, says the post shared by Lula.

“Eduardo Leite (PSDB) wrote about the president’s arrival: “We will work to save lives and create the conditions for the State’s recovery.” “This is not just a time for overflights, but for everyone to work together to save lives. The aircraft need to be focused on rescues”, added the governor.
