In March, according to the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), Bahia generated 12,482 formal jobs, resulting from the difference between 86,774 admissions and 74,282 dismissals. This is the third month in a row with a positive balance. Under the responsibility of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, formal employment data was systematized by the Superintendency of Economic and Social Studies of Bahia (SEI).

In Bahia, the March balance was higher than both that of February (+9,433 jobs) and that of the same month last year (+9,408 jobs). Furthermore, the result for March proved to be the best of the year so far in the state.

With the balance of March, Bahia now has 2,077,441 active CLT contracts, a variation of 0.60% on the number of the immediately previous month. The municipality of Salvador, when recording a balance of 3,595 CLT jobs, recorded 653,662 jobs, indicating an increase of 0.55% over the number of jobs existing in February.

In Bahia, in March, all five major groups of economic activities recorded a positive balance of CLT jobs. The services segment (+8,155 vacancies) was the one that generated the most jobs among the sectors. Next, general industry (+1,580 jobs), agriculture, livestock, forestry production, fishing and aquaculture (+1,475 jobs), commerce; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+950 jobs) and construction (+323 jobs) were also responsible for the generation.

In the month, Brazil recorded a balance of 244,315 vacancies, while the Northeast registered 16,037 new positions – representing relative variations of 0.53% and 0.21% compared to the previous month’s stock, respectively. Bahia (+0.60%), therefore, from February to March, showed a relative increase in the stock of bonds greater than that of the country and that of the northeastern region.

Of the 27 federative units in the national territory, 25 of them showed growth in CLT employment in March this year. The states of Alagoas (-9,589 jobs) and Sergipe (-1,875 jobs), in this case, were those with a negative balance in the country in the month. Bahia, with 12,482 new jobs, had the seventh highest balance in the country. In relative terms, with a percentage change of 0.60%, it ranked 11th.

In the Northeast, in March, seven of the nine states experienced an increase in formal employment. In absolute terms, Bahia (+12,482 jobs) ranked first in job creation among northeastern units in the month. In relative terms, on the other hand, the state of Bahia (+0.60%) ranked second in the northeastern territory.

In the Northeast Region, with regard to the generation of jobs, Bahia (+12,482 jobs) was followed by the states of Ceará (+6,185 jobs), Piauí (+3,015 CLT jobs), Maranhão (+2,777 jobs), Rio Grande do Norte (+1,415 jobs), Pernambuco (+1,364 jobs) and Paraíba (+263 jobs). The federative units of Alagoas (-9,589 jobs) and Sergipe (-1,875 jobs), on the other hand, closed CLT positions.

From the point of view of the relative monthly variation in stock, the state of Piauí (+0.86%) was the highlight of the northeastern region, followed by Bahia (0.60%), Ceará (0.46%), Maranhão (0.43%), Rio Grande do Norte (+0.28%), Pernambuco (0.09%) and Paraíba (0.05%). With negative fluctuations, Sergipe (-0.57%) and Alagoas (-2.16%).

In the aggregate of the first three months of 2024, taking into account the adjusted series, which incorporates information declared after the deadline, Bahia filled 25,146 new vacancies – an increase of 1.23% in relation to the total number of CLT positions at the beginning of the year. The municipality of Salvador, in turn, registered 17,979 new jobs in the period (positive variation of 2.83%).

According to SEI information production specialist, Luiz Fernando Lobo, it is worth highlighting that “the generation of registered jobs continues to surprise in 2024 in Bahia, given that the accumulated balance from January to March this year, with little more of 25 thousand new jobs, surpasses the result for the same set of months last year, when 22,056 new employment contracts were established”.

In the sum of January to March, from a sectoral point of view, four of the five major groups of economic activities recorded a positive result. The services sector (+17,468 vacancies), by far, had the largest surplus. Next, the segments of agriculture, livestock, forestry production, fishing and aquaculture (+3,013 jobs), general industry (+2,592 jobs) and construction (+2,259 jobs) were also responsible for the emergence of new jobs. Thus, trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-185 jobs) was the only group with net job losses in the year to date.

Growth in CLT employment was also observed in Brazil and the Northeast in the year to date, with 719,033 and 37,136 new vacancies, respectively – meaning, in that order, relative increases of 1.58% and 0.49% in relation to the number of jobs CLT holders at the beginning of the year. Bahia (+1.23%), thus, exhibited relative growth in formal employment that was greater than that of the Northeast, but lower than that of the country in the year.

Of the country’s 27 federative units, 25 of them saw an increase in the number of CLT jobs this year. The states of Alagoas (-11,978 jobs) and Maranhão (-854 jobs) were those with a negative balance. Bahia, with 25,146 new jobs, had the ninth highest aggregate balance in the country. Bahia’s relative performance, with an increase of 1.23% in the year, placed the state in 17th place in the country as a whole.

Still in terms of accumulated balance in the year, the Bahian federative unit (+25,146 jobs) continued ahead of the others in the Northeast, which had Ceará (+11,197 jobs) and Pernambuco (+5,709 jobs) in second and third positions, respectively. In proportional terms, in the aggregate for the year, Bahia (+1.23%) also came in first place within the northeastern region.
