The Executive Branch may establish a state policy to reduce traffic deaths and accidents. The authorization is contained in Bill 3,366/20, authored by deputy Danniel Librelon (REP), which the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro approved, in a second discussion. The measure went to Governor Cláudio Castro, who has up to 15 working days to sanction or veto it.

The main objective of the policy is, within ten years, to reduce by half the state rate of deaths per vehicle group and the state rate of deaths per group of inhabitants within the State of Rio.

The annual targets will be set by the State Traffic Council (Cetran/RJ), through a well-founded proposal for each executive body of the state traffic system, based on the indices calculated in the previous year.

The results obtained will be forwarded to the National Traffic Council (Contran), by August 10th of each year, for the purpose of supplying Brazilian statistics provided for in the national plan. The goals and results must also be published on the traffic agencies’ websites, especially in September, during national traffic month.

The Rio State Traffic Department (Detran/RJ) will be the body responsible for media campaigns and dissemination of the policy, as well as providing, in its annual budget, financial and economic resources for implementation with regard to state expenses arising of this standard.

“The aim is to promote the safety and protection of citizens in the coming years. This proposed instrument will serve as a statistical tool for better planning of prevention and support actions, making traffic safer and saving lives”, declared Librelon.
