The State Department of Health of Bahia (Sesab) reported, this Monday (29/4), the state recorded 49 deaths due to dengue. The last three deaths were recorded in residents of Encruzilhada, Tanque Novo and Vitória da Conquista.

According to Sesab, Bahia has a fatality rate of 2.7%, lower than the national average. The distribution of fatal cases was configured as follows: Vitória da Conquista (11), Jacaraci (4), Juazeiro (4), Feira de Santana (3), Piripá (3), Barra do Choça (2), Caetité (2 ), Coaraci (2), Encruzilhada (2), Santo Antônio de Jesus (2), Bom Jesus da Lapa (1), Caculé (1), Caetanos (1), Campo Formoso (1), Caraíbas (1) Carinhanha ( 1), Guanambi (1), Ibiassucê (1), Ipiaú (1), Irecê (1), Luís Eduardo Magalhães (1), Maraú (1), Palmas de Monte Alto (1), Santo Estevão (1), Seabra (1), Tanque Novo (1) and Várzea Nova (1).

Yesterday (29/4), according to Sesab, Bahia received another 67,087 doses of the dengue vaccine, to be distributed to 115 municipalities, according to criteria established by the Ministry of Health.

With this delivery, the state accounts for 237,556 doses received, with the target audience for immunization being the age group from 10 to 14 years old. The State Health Secretary, Roberta Santana, explains that “vaccination reduces the risk of symptomatic infection, hospitalizations and morbidity and mortality from the disease and serves as an important ally in the fight against the virus. In addition to immunization, society as a whole must remain committed to eliminating mosquito breeding sites, as the most immediate way to stop the spread of dengue.”

In 2024, Bahia records 169,758 cases of dengue, an increase of 736.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Currently, there are 241 municipalities in the epidemic, 71 at risk and 62 on alert. At the weekly meeting of the Health Emergency Operations Center (Coes), which brings together representatives from various government spheres, in addition to the State Health Council (CES) and the Council of Municipal Health Secretaries (Cosems-BA), the municipality of Vitória da Conquista cited again as the most worrying case.

“Vitória da Conquista is currently experiencing a triple epidemic. There are 26,595 cases and 11 confirmed deaths from dengue, not counting the 2,570 notifications of chikungunya and 1,627 of zika”, states the State’s undersecretary of health, Paulo Barbosa.

The director of epidemiological surveillance in Bahia, Márcia São Pedro, points out that the State Government has already invested more than R$ 21 million in actions to combat arboviruses in 2024. “We carry out actions with smoke in several locations, we train more than 19 thousand agents of endemic diseases and care teams, in addition to sending medicines and equipment to the municipalities. We observed an inflection in the number of new cases in the last epidemiological week, but we must remain mobilized and engaged to contain the disease.”

VACCINATION

A survey carried out by the Health Department of the State of Bahia (Sesab) showed that only 234 doses, out of a total of 120,022 vaccines expiring on April 30, had not been used until this Monday morning (29). “This demonstrates the commitment of municipalities and the State to sensitize people about the importance of vaccination. We must use this good example to mobilize society towards all types of vaccines, such as influenza, whose immunized population does not reach 20%”, assesses the undersecretary.
