The deadline for cities to join the Union with Municipalities program for the Reduction of Deforestation and Forest Fires in the Amazon has been extended until May 31st. The period for 70 cities considered priorities to participate in the national policy that foresees investments of R$730 million would end this Tuesday (30).
Launched in April, the initiative aims to increase control and monitoring of fires and deforestation in the Amazon and promote land and environmental regularization, in addition to recovering native vegetation and supporting sustainable production.
According to the federal government, by 2026 it is planned to create governance offices in municipalities that confirm membership. There will be support to enable at least 30 more municipal brigades to prevent and combat forest fires.
Degradation
The cities able to join the project are the 70 with the greatest participation in deforestation and degradation of the Amazon. To participate, it is necessary for the city hall to sign an agreement with the Union. It will also be necessary to prepare a work program aligned with the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon, updated in its fifth phase in June last year.
After joining, cities will receive an initial funding to strengthen their capacity to implement and monitor actions. If they do not yet have a municipal environmental department and technical staff to monitor public policies, cities must implement the changes.
More resources are allocated to municipalities in proportion to the reduction in indices released by the Satellite Monitoring Project for Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (Prodes), of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).
The extension of the deadline was published this Tuesday (30) in the Official Diary of the Union.
