The period marked by the heavy rains of the so-called “Amazonian winter” brings with it a high incidence in the number of cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the state, especially in children. The State Department of Health (SES-AM) guides the population on how to identify cases and where to seek care.

The secretary of SES-AM, Nayara Maksoud, highlights that, during the seasonal period of SRAGS, the Government of Amazonas is putting into practice special measures, aimed at children. They include expanding beds, reorganizing the flow of care, working together with primary care and daily monitoring of demands in the units, with the aim of anticipating actions to avoid overcrowding the network, thus guaranteeing full assistance to patients. . “Children’s hospitals are operating with expanded capacity, with laboratory and imaging support, among other measures,” says Maksoud.

Pediatrician Eugênio Tavares, from the state health network, highlights that it is important for the population to be aware of the symptoms of SARS and know where to seek medical care.

According to the specialist, when the flu is milder, characterized by cough, low fever, vomiting (caused by cough), runny nose, diarrhea and no tiredness, parents should take their little ones to Basic Health Units (UBSs) and Centers of Comprehensive Care for Children and Adolescents (CAICs). These units are able to treat any respiratory infection, from mild to moderate. “There is no need to take the child to emergency rooms”, notes the doctor.

In more serious cases, when they experience vomiting that does not stop, wheezing with fatigue, fever above 39 degrees, any episode of convulsion or signs of cyanosis (purplish color), parents should immediately go to an emergency room.
