Check out what’s open and what’s closed this Wednesday (1st), Labor Day

-

This Wednesday, May 1st, the Labor Day, National holiday in Brazil and in more than 80 countries.

The choice of date is related to a workers movement what happened in 19th centuryin the city of Chicago, in the United States, who fought for appreciation and better working conditions.

The workers decided to start a strike movement on May 1, 1886in defense of reducing the working day to eight hours.

At the time, it was common for working hours to be 12 hours a day. It is estimated that around 340 thousand workers were mobilized throughout the United States.

The strike lasted for around three days, and some incidents were reported against the striking workers.

On May 3, protesters were killed by police. The following day, thousands of workers gathered in protest in Haymarket Square. The demonstration, which had a peaceful bias, became a massacre in repression against the protesters.

In Brazil, the date began to be celebrated informally by workers at the beginning of the 20th century; The national holiday was only declared after the law nº 10,607, of December 19, 2002, during the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso.
