RS government withdraws from ICMS increase and cuts tax benefits; find out what changes in the basic food basket | Rio Grande do Sul

The government of Rio Grande do Sul announced, this Tuesday (30), the cut of tax benefits on basic food basket products. Measure comes into effect this Wednesday (1st). See what changes below.

Amid the discussions, Eduardo Leite once again proposed an increase in ICMSthis time, from 17% to 19%. However, the project was removed from the agenda againgiven the risk of defeat in the Assembly.

The tax increase goes against Eduardo Leite’s campaign promise, according to a survey by g1. The governor justified that, without the ICMS adjustment or some compensation measure, such as the cut in tax benefits, RS would lose R$4 billion annually with the tax reform.

  • Basic food basket*: tax goes from 7% to 12%
  • French bread: was exempt, now it is taxed at 12%
  • ABC Milk: was exempt, now it is taxed at 12%
  • Fruits, vegetables and greens: exempt until 12/31/2024
  • Eggs: exempt until 12/31/2024

* Mixes and pastes for preparing bread, meat, sugar, coffee, yerba mate, beans, rice, pasta, flour, salt, lard, vegetable oils, margarine and other breads.
