The city council of Juazeiro, in the north of Bahia, removed the statue of former player Daniel Alves from a city square in the early hours of this Monday (29). The measure was taken following a recommendation from the Public Ministry of Bahia (MP-BA). Before being removed, the statue was the target of several acts of vandalism. The MP-BA recommendation was made on April 23 of this year and was justified by the city and state legislation, which prohibit tributes to living people made with public goods.
Shortly after the recommendation, the city informed that the statue would be removed, but had not announced the date of removal. This Monday, the statue was removed with the help of a tow truck and taken to the city hall’s warehouse. According to the municipal agency’s press office, there is no prediction of what will be done with it.
Although the MP-BA’s justifications are municipal and state laws, the withdrawal takes place amidst the former football player’s conviction for rape. The crime took place in Barcelona, Spain, and the trial ended on February 22.
Despite having been convicted of the crime, the former player appealed the decision and awaits the final word from the Spanish justice system while free. To obtain the benefit, he paid a bail of 1 million euros.
Daniel Alves was preventively arrested in September 2023, in Spain. In the same month, the statue of Juazeiro was vandalized for the first time, with a black bag and sticky tape.
In February of this year, while the former player’s trial was taking place, the statue was vandalized again, this time with white paint.
Protest is held at the statue in honor of Daniel Alves, in Juazeiro
In March this year, a group of around 60 protesters protested on March 8, International Women’s Day, next to the statue. [Veja vídeo acima]
The protest featured posters that carried phrases such as “Stop killing us”, “No rape culture” and “Daniel Alves rapist”.
