TRT/MS orders company to pay R$300,000 to worker after serious injuries | News from Campo Grande and MS

After suffering serious injuries, a garbage collector while performing his duties in the city of Rio Brilhante will receive R$300,000 for material, moral and aesthetic damages.

The accident occurred in 2021, when the worker, aged 26, was run over by the garbage truck. He suffered a femur fracture, requiring three surgeries and becoming completely and permanently incapacitated for activity.

That same year, 179 work accidents involving household waste collectors were recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul, according to data from the Occupational Safety and Health Observatory, which gathers information from the INSS.

In the last 10 years, R$387 million was spent on sickness benefits due to work accidents in Mato Grosso do Sul. The historical series includes data from 2012 to 2021, when R$609 million was allocated to retirement due to disability due to work accidents , in the State.

The case was judged, by majority, by the Second Panel of the Regional Labor Court of the 24th Region, which ordered the company to pay compensation.

In order to raise awareness among the population about the importance of health and safety, TRT/MS promotes actions aimed at preventing workplace accidents. In 2023, 3,261 new cases regarding occupational diseases and 2,723 actions referring to work accidents were received by the Labor Court in Mato Grosso do Sul. The regional manager of the Safe Work Program, judge João de Deus Gomes de Souza, points out the importance of cooperation between employers and workers. “The employer’s main role is to make safety equipment available for them to use. There is a need for the worker to be able to use them for their safety, so that they can return to their home safely” concludes the judge.
