Pitbull is shot dead after attacking a prosecutor during a demolition operation on Gigoia Island | Rio de Janeiro

Rio – A pitbull dog was shot dead after attacking a prosecutor from the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), this Monday (29), during a joint operation to demolish two irregularly constructed buildings on Ilha da Gigoia, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone of Rio.

With the demolition, it is estimated that there will be a loss of R$ 3.5 million to those responsible for the work. The action is carried out between the Public Order Secretariat (Seop) and the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, through the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco). One of the buildings has three floors and two apartments per floor and the other, also with three floors, with four apartments per floor. Both were built without any authorization from Rio City Hall.

The prosecutor was attacked by the dog while inspecting a back area. At the time of the attack, the victim entered the room where the animal was.

The animal’s owner, who was following the action, disappeared from the scene at the time of the attack. The dog was hit by at least three shots and succumbed to his injuries. Named Zeus, he was four years old and had lived with the same owner for three years. The prosecutor was rescued and taken to the hospital. There is no information about his health status.

The first building was nearing completion and the second was in progress, with part in the finishing phase and the other in the masonry phase. Furthermore, the buildings do not meet the urban parameters of the region.

The constructions had been inspected since the beginning of construction, with the first notification being made in April 2023. At that time, those responsible accelerated the works in total disregard of the notification that determined the immediate stoppage.

The buildings were built on a 500 square meter plot and have approximately 900 square meters of built area.

The MPRJ’s activities aim to investigate possible signs of the practice of environmental crimes and criminal organizations, among others, with a view to promoting the criminal liability of those responsible for irregular constructions and environmental offenses.
