A bus with passengers that left Caruaru, in the state’s Agreste region, overturned on a federal highway in Minas Gerais, in the southeast of the country, and left at least seven people dead.

The accident was recorded this Saturday (27), at kilometer 85, of BR-116, in Medina, in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region.

The vehicle was transporting 54 passengers from the city of Caruaru to Campinas, in the interior of the State of São Paulo, 94 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo.

Before that, the collective made a stop in Vitória da Conquista, in the interior of the State of Bahia.

According to the Minas Gerais Fire Department, four deaths were reported at the scene of the accident and three other people died on the way to the hospital.

The injured passengers were taken to Santa Rita Hospital, in Medina; to the Vale do Jequitinhonha Hospital, in Itaobim; and to a health unit in Pedra Azul.

According to the corporation, the accident happened on the stretch between the two municipalities, when the bus overturned on a curve.

Firefighters were unable to say whether the vehicle was ready to transport passengers. According to the military, the list of passengers was not found at the location and the driver was also not located.

As the transportation of the injured was carried out by Samu, the driver could be among them or among the dead.

Three of the four victims of the accident with a tourist bus were identified on Saturday night (27), on BR-116, in Medina, in Vale do Jequitinhonha, in Minas Gerais. (see names and ages below)

Two victims are from Pernambuco, and one from Rio de Janeiro. The fourth victim, a woman, has also been identified, but according to the Almenara Legal Medical Institute, documents are missing to confirm her name and age.

The accident also left 32 people injured, according to the Federal Highway Police (PRF). The vehicle with 54 people overturned on BR-116, in a place known as “death curve”.

The injured were taken to two hospitals in the region, Santa Rita in Medina and Vale do Jequitinhonha in Itaobim. Two were in a more serious condition and should be transferred this Sunday (28), to a hospital in Teófilo Otoni.

The bodies of the identified victims were released for burial, according to the IML. The four dead were passengers.

The tourist bus left Caruaru in Pernambuco, heading to the capital of São Paulo. The point of the accident was at kilometer 90 of the highway, 18 km from Medina and 22 km from Itaobim, both in the Jequitinhonha Valley.

The trip, which would have lasted a total of 34 hours, was interrupted 17 hours after boarding in the city of Caruaru, in Pernambuco.

The PRF reported that the driver of the vehicle lost control of the steering wheel, hit a protective wall on the side of the road, hit the shoulder and fell onto the road.

There were victims trapped in the wreckage, but the police did not say how many people.
