O Ruth de Souza Audiovisual Notice announced those selected with good news for Amazonas. From Manaus, “Ykamiabas”, from Iguape Produções LTDA, is among the 18 chosen from a total of 187 registered. The management will be in charge of Regina Lúcia Azevedo de Melo.
With a total investment of R$36 million and R$2 million allocated to each of the projects, The notice is aimed at the production of feature-length cinematographic works directed by cis women or first-time transgender people. With a free theme and presented by independent Brazilian producers, the projects are fiction. The initial destination is the showroom market.
Of the selected candidates, nine are black women (six black women and three brown women), one indigenous woman and eight white women. Five of them are from the Southeast and four from the Northeast. The North, South and Central-West regions each have three representatives. Those selected are from Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Ceará, Paraíba São Paulo, Distrito Federal, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Piauí, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Tocantins and Amazonas.
The call honors the legacy of Rio de Janeiro actress Ruth de Souza. A pioneer in Brazilian theater, cinema and television, she was the first black artist to gain prominence in national dramaturgy, paving the way for other performers. “The Ruth de Souza Notice is an important milestone for Brazilian cinema. It encourages and values the diversity of female voices in audiovisual. We look forward to seeing the unique stories and perspectives that will be brought to the screen by these talented debut directors.”, said Joelma Gonzaga, Secretary of Audiovisual at the Ministry of Culture.
