Patient steals gun and kills hospital guard in Recife. He is later killed while trying to escape
The conflict took place in the red ward of the hospital’s emergency room, during a shift change, at around 4:30 am on Friday. (see video above). At a press conference, the director of HR, Petrus Andrade Lima, said that the patient took the gun used by Nivaldo and shot the security guard, who was trying to retrieve the weapon.
To g1, lawyer Eduardo Morais, who represents the security guards involved in the episode, said that Nivaldo was with a co-worker when he was shot in the chest without having time to react. According to the lawyer, the victim was shot two more times after he fell to the ground.
Nivaldo Bezerra da Silva was 66 years old, had worked for over 22 years at Hospital da Restauração and was on his last shift before retirement. He was the father of two children, a 42-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, and grandfather of three grandchildren, aged 16, 12 and 8.
According to his daughter, Katiane Silvestre, Nivaldo loved his work and never complained about the shift routine.
Who was the shooter and how was he killed?

The patient who killed Nivaldo Bezerra did not have his name or age disclosed. What is known about him is that he lived in Timbaúba, in the Zona da Mata Norte of Pernambuco, and was admitted to Hospital da Restauração being treated for back pain.
After shooting, the patient tried to escape through an exit behind the hospital, using a staircase that leads to the ambulance parking lot.
According to delegate Diego Pinheiro, manager of the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP), the shooter stole an ambulance and forced the driver to take him out of the hospital. After a few meters, the car was reached by other hospital guards, who were following the shooter.
When they met, a confrontation began and the patient shot a guard in the chest, who was not injured as he was wearing a bulletproof vest. According to the delegate, two guards shot the patient: the one who was shot in the chest and another who was filmed giving the fatal shot.
The guard who shot the armed patient outside the hospital, when he had already been shot by another guard seconds before, was arrested for murder. His name and age were not released by police.

A patient who witnessed the crime was also shot in the shoulder by the man who stole the gun during the confusion inside the hospital. “He turned the gun on me and shot me in the shoulder,” said the victim, who preferred to remain anonymous. (see video above).
How does security work at the hospital?
According to the management of Hospital da Restauração, there are, in total, 66 security guards hired by a company to work on the security of the health unit. The shifts are carried out by 16 professionals at night and 18 during the day.

The Civil Police of Pernambuco reported that it began investigating the case, which was registered as a completed double homicide and an attempted homicide. A police investigation was launched, under the responsibility of the DHPP, to determine all the facts (see video above).
Four guards involved in the patient’s death were taken to the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP), including the one who had the weapon taken, the one who was shot in the chest and the one who fired the last shot at the patient.
In an interview with TV Globodelegate Diego Pinheiro, manager of the DHPP, explained the next steps in the police investigation.
“We are working with the hypothesis that he [o paciente] has gone into an outbreak. We do not have this confirmation. The investigation will continue and you can verify this. Hospital staff and family members will be heard,” she said.
