The “Conterraneos Novos de Guerra” project celebrates Labor Day with a multicultural program that combines diverse artistic expressions such as cinema, poetry, visual arts and music. To start, on Tuesday, April 30th, starting at 7pm, the Centro Tradicional de Invenção Cultural, headquarters of Grupo Seu Estrelo, welcomes award-winning filmmaker Vladimir Carvalho for the screening of the documentary “Brasília Segundo Feldman”. The celebration continues the following day, May 1st, starting at 5pm, at the National Museum of the Republic, with shows by artists and groups of local and national renown.

Tickets are free and are now available for collection at Sympla.

Conterraneos is a sociocultural project included in the Notice Transforming Energy into Culture 2023. The initiative, created by the group Seu Estrelo and Fuá do Terreiro, is promoted by the Neoenergia Institute and has financial support from the Culture Incentive Law (LIC-DF).

About the project

According to Master Tico Magalhães, “Conterrâneos Novos de Guerra” proposes a tribute to the filmmaker Vladimir Carvalho, the candangos and the cultural workers of the DF.

“We created the project as part of Seu Estrelo’s mission: to promote and invent a new cultural identity for Brasília. We will bring together groups, Brasília artists from different generations and cultural warriors who are building and consolidating the cultural scene in the DF for important recognition and celebration”, comments the group Captain.

According to Maria Isabela Aquino, general coordinator of the project, on Labor Day, during the event, excerpts from the film “Conterrâneos Velhos de Guerra”, one of Vladimir Carvalho’s most famous documentaries, illustrations by Master Popular Tico Magalhães and concrete poems by Catalan TT will be projected onto the dome of the National Museum, creating a video scenography for the event.

Nationally renowned participations

As it could not be otherwise, the project will feature the presence of recognized personalities from Brazilian culture. Each of the groups and artists invited to compose the program in honor of the workers has a symbolic relationship with Brasília.

Among them, Vladimir Carvalho stands out, honored by the project whose legacy in national cinema is invaluable. The award-winning documentary filmmaker participates in the screening of “Brasília according to Feldman”, a film released in 1979, directed by him and the American designer, Eugene Feldman. The production portrays the construction period of the capital, presents the precariousness of workers’ safety due to the accelerated pace of construction, as well as testimonies from pioneers about the living conditions of the candangos. A unique opportunity to meet and exchange with this national figure who recently turned 90 years old.

On Labor Day, right after the show by Brazilian singer and songwriter Ellen Oléria, the candangos welcome Hamilton de Holanda. The multi-award-winning improviser and composer began his career at the Brasília School of Music, went beyond the borders of Quadrado and today inspires audiences around the world. Mestre do Bandolim performs with the group Seu Estrelo, at 9pm.

“Returning to Brasília is always special for me. That’s where my musical journey began, and being able to contribute to the construction of the city’s cultural identity is an honor. I believe in the artistic potential that Brasília has, and I’m excited to be part of this project that aims to strengthen and celebrate our musical heritage and what is to come. Seu Estrelo represents well what Brasília produces in terms of art, tradition and future”, celebrates Hamilton.
