This Friday, April 26th, is National Day to Prevent and Combat High Blood Pressure. To raise awareness among the population about the importance of the date, the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC) will hold an educational event on the day at Shopping Estação, in Cuiabá.

With the support of Shopping Estação, and sponsorship from Sonicardio, the company AstraZeneca and Libbs Farmacêutica, SBC MT will carry out blood pressure measurement and guidance regarding the disease free of charge from 10am to 10pm.

Open to the general public, the action takes place simultaneously throughout Brazil. The SBC initiative is one of several commemorative dates in which the Society focuses and puts itself in direct contact with the population to provide clarification on cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, raising awareness about the importance of preventing and treating these diseases.

According to Dr. Danilo Arruda Júnior, president of SBC MT and technical director of Sonicardio hemodynamics clinic in Cuiabá, the more information a person has about the disease, the greater the chance of diagnosis, control and reduction of cardiovascular events that lead to death.

“In this way, we will provide guidance on measures to prevent and control hypertension. The objective is to inform and raise awareness among the population that high blood pressure is extremely serious, despite having no symptoms”, he explained.

High blood pressure already affects 35% of the Brazilian population, in addition to being responsible for triggering up to 80% of cases of stroke and 60% of cases of heart attack registered in the country.

“The campaign has an educational nature and one of its objectives is to screen possible individuals with hypertension in the general population who are unaware of the diagnosis, or individuals known to be hypertensive but whose blood pressure measurements are outside the treatment target. This way, we can guide the patient so that he seeks care in the health network for subsequent diagnostic confirmation and/or therapeutic adjustment,” explained Dr. Marcos Vinicius da Silva, cardiologist Director of FUNCOR.

Data from the Ministry of Health also indicate that cardiovascular problems are responsible for approximately 300,000 deaths per year in Brazil. Furthermore, 50% of hypertensive people in Brazil still do not know they have the problem.
