Minas Gerais cuisine is famous around the world and the state is considered by many to be home to the best food in Brazil. Tropeiro, cheese bread and guava paste are some of the items that are part of our menu and translate, in bites, the pride of being from Minas Gerais.

This Friday (25), Exame magazine released the list of the 100 best restaurants in Brazil, chosen by a jury made up of 72 renowned food critics and influencers. Minas has nine representatives on the list, including two in the top 20. 11th: Pacato (Belo Horizonte/MG)

Led by chef Caio Soter, Pacato offers a tasting menu with eight courses for R$ 330.60, as well as options on the à la carte menu, such as a pork Beef Wellington with pumpkin puree, toasted okra and pork sauce for R$ $129.60. Pacato is located at Rua Rio de Janeiro, 2735, Lourdes, Belo Horizonte. Open from Wednesday to Saturday from 12pm to 4pm; and 7pm to 11pm. Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.

16th: Glouton (Belo Horizonte/MG)

With more than 10 years of history, Glouton is run by chef Léo Paixão who, as reported by Exame magazine, also worked as a doctor. The restaurant mixes typically Minas Gerais ingredients with touches of classic cuisine. The tasting menu costs R$400.00 and offers dishes such as suckling pig served with fruit farofa. Glouton is located at Rua Bárbara Heliodora, 59, Lourdes, Belo Horizonte. Open from Monday to Thursday from 7pm to 11pm; Saturday and Sunday from 7pm to 11:30pm.

19th: Tupis Kitchen (Belo Horizonte/MG)

One of the highlights of the ‘new’ Mercado Novo, Cozinha Tupis is led by chef Henrique Gilberto and has a seasonal menu that always explores the restaurant’s research themes: counter preserves, embers, fried foods, broths, offal, griddles and fairs. Tripe and stewed cabbage stuffed with pork knuckle were the dishes highlighted by the magazine. Cozinha Tupis is located at Avenida Olegário Maciel, 742, LJ 2161, Centro, Belo Horizonte. Open from Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner. In the afternoon, it opens from 3pm with a smaller menu. On Sunday, it runs from 11:30 am until 4 pm.

34th: Tragaluz (Tiradentes-MG)

One of the two restaurants from Minas Gerais that make up the list and are not located in the capital of Minas Gerais, Tragaluz is located in the historic city of Tiradentes, in a mansion over 300 years old in the city center. Exame highlighted the restaurant’s dessert menu, which is led by chef Felipe Rameh. Tragaluz is located at Rua Direita, 52, Centro, Tiradentes. Open from Wednesday to Monday from 7pm. On Saturdays, it only opens for lunch on special dates, such as the Tiradentes Gastronomy Festival.

37th: Florestal (Belo Horizonte/MG)

The second restaurant headed by Bruna Martins to appear on the list is in the Floresta neighborhood and features dishes with a strong presence of vegetables, without leaving animal protein aside. Squid salad and oriental pasta with mushrooms, accompanied by kimchi and breaded eggplant sandwiches are some of the dishes on the menu. Florestal is located at Avenida Assis Chateaubriand, 176, Floresta, Belo Horizonte. Open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 11pm, Friday from 12pm to 3:30pm and 6pm to 11pm, Saturday from 12pm to 11pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

44th: Xapuri (Belo Horizonte/MG)

One of the most popular restaurants among tourists visiting the capital of Minas Gerais, Xapuri offers typically Minas Gerais meals that are well served, such as carne de panela, ‘cotelinha de sinhá’ and roast sirloin, all accompanied by typically Minas Gerais garnishes. Xapuri is located at Rua Mandacarú, 260, Trevo, Belo Horizonte. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 10pm, Sunday from 11am to 5pm.

46th: Birosca (Belo Horizonte/MG)

One of the most popular restaurants in the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Tereza, Birosca is run by chef Bruna Martins, who offers a menu full of dishes that are innovative, but, at the same time, hark back to classic Minas Gerais food. Oxtail pirão cake with watercress mayonnaise and ‘franguin à passarin’ with fermented guava paste and liver curd are some of the items offered by the restaurant. Birosca is located at Rua Silvianópolis, 483, Santa Tereza, Belo Horizonte. Open from Wednesday to Friday from 6pm to 11pm, Saturday from 12pm to 11pm and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.

62nd: Per Lui (Belo Horizonte/MG)

Founded two years ago, the restaurant run by chef Yves Saliba offers only the eight dishes on the tasting menu, which costs R$260.00 and is updated every three months. The menu emerged from trips made by the chef and his partner, Victor Hugo Barcelos. Per Lui is located at Rua Muzambinho, 608 – Serra, Belo Horizonte – MG. Open from Wednesday to Saturday from 7pm to midnight.

88th La Villa (Tiradentes-MG)

Another Tiradentes restaurant on the list, this one run by chef Matheus Paratella, who opened La Villa after living in Italy for 20 years. The menu brings together Italian and Minas Gerais references, such as an artisanal pasta carbonara sautéed with pancetta and finished with fresh cream, country yolk, Mantiqueira parmesan and black pepper. La Villa is located at Rua Francisco Cândido Barbosa, 31A, in the center of Tiradentes. Open from Wednesday to Friday from 7pm to 10:30pm. Saturday from 12:30pm to 3pm and from 7pm to 11pm. Sunday from 12:30pm to 3pm.

90º: Ninita (Belo Horizonte/MG)

Another restaurant by chef Léo Paixão. This one, in this case, mixes Italian and Minas Gerais cuisine with dishes such as creamy cheese polenta from half cure, dripping and fried chicken with okra and ora-pro-nobis. The name is a tribute to the chef’s great-grandmother, who was also a cook and pastry chef. Ninita is located at Rua Bárbara Heliodora 71, Lourdes, Belo Horizonte, Mg. Open on Monday from 6pm to 10pm, Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 5pm and from 6pm to 11pm. Sunday from 12pm to 5pm.
