MARANHÃO, April 25, 2024 – Almost 40% of households in the North and Northeast recorded some level of food insecurity (mild, moderate or severe) in 2023.
The two regions are the most affected by the problem in Brazil, according to data released this Thursday (25) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
Analysis of state numbers reinforces that food insecurity is more present in the North and Northeast regions.
In 2023, the highest percentage of households in this condition was found in Sergipe: 49.2%. In other words, almost half of local homes had some level of the problem.
Pará (47.7%), Maranhão (43.6%), Amazonas (42.6%) and Piauí (42%) followed.
At the other end of the list, the lowest levels were recorded by Santa Catarina (11.2%), Paraná (17.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (18.7%), Rondônia (20%) and Espírito Santo (20 .8%).
Considering only moderate and severe levels of food insecurity, the proportion of affected households was 9.4% in Brazil in 2023.
Pará is the state with the highest percentage of homes in these conditions: 20.3% – equivalent to 1 in every 5 addresses. Sergipe (18.7%) and Amapá (18.6%) come next.
On the other hand, the lowest levels of households with moderate or severe food insecurity were in Santa Catarina (3.1%) and Paraná (4.8%). Espírito Santo (5.1%) and Rondônia (5.1%), tied, appeared later.
The IBGE also pointed out that the proportions of households with moderate or severe food insecurity in the North (16%) and Northeast (14.8%) regions were much higher than those in the Central-West (7.9%), Southeast (6, 7%) and from the South (4.7%).
