Rio – The artwork for Unidos do Viradouro, current champion of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, will be chosen through a competition promoted in schools in Pernambuco, in partnership with the State Department of Education of Pernambuco. Students and employees from the 96 schools covered by the regional management that have technical Visual Art courses, located in the cities of Abreu e Lima, Araçoiaba, Igarassu, Ilha de Itamaracá, Itapissuma, Olinda and Paulista, can participate.

A video will be published on Viradouro’s social networks this Thursday (25), in which carnival artist Tarcísio Zanon will give guidance to candidates. The contest rules are available on the school website.

The winner, who will have the right to parade with Viradouro at the Sambadrome in 2025, will be announced on May 25th. The chosen art will be printed on all products created by the school relating to the plot of the next parade, such as banners, t-shirts and caps.

The idea of holding a competition with artists from Pernambuco came about because Tarcísio was inspired by João Batista, aka Malunguinho,’s relationship with the state. The Afro-indigenous entity emerged in the mid-19th century in the region and led the Quilombo Catucá. “I believe in the cultural integration that this competition will promote. The Viradouro poster will value the artist’s work from Pernambuco, who lives in the same region where the main character of our plot lived”, he stated.

Technician in Promotion of Racial and Ethnic-Racial Equality and working in the Regional Education Management (GRE) of Pernambuco, professor João Monteiro is optimistic about the results of the partnership with Viradouro: “Students, employees and their communities are familiar with the programs carried out by GRE and relations with cultural diversity. Recife and the Metropolitan Region have broad cultural diversity and samba is part of this cultural melting pot”, he said.
