SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – The rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul limited further progress in the 2023/24 harvest, which this week reached 66% of the total cultivated in the State, the second Brazilian producer of the oilseed in the current season, Emater reported on Thursday.

Despite the rain, which hampered work in the fields, the total harvested increased by 17 percentage points compared to the previous week, according to data from Emater.

“Rainfall in variable volumes, which occurred in recent periods over Rio Grande do Sul, reduced the pace of soybean harvesting…”, said Emater.

The technical assistance company linked to the State government also said that 28% of the harvest is maturing and 6% of the crops are filling grain.

According to Emater, the “specifically heavy rains that occurred in the central-western region of the State, where they exceeded 250 mm, caused the threshing of pods and the overflow of water courses, directly affecting crops”.

As the harvest progresses into the final third, there is a tendency to reduce crop productivity, but the report assesses that this situation does not compromise the current harvest, which is considered “quite satisfactory”.

The productivity estimate remains at 3,329 kg/hectares on average, Emater said, indicating a record harvest.

The harvest reached 82% of the planted area in the State.

“The pace of harvesting is still a little slow due to the prioritization of soybean harvesting and rainfall, which made the operation difficult.”
