Expansion of the railway network increases demand for engineers in Bahia

The resumption of major infrastructure works by the Federal Government increases expectations for economic growth and directly impacts the construction sector. In Bahia, the works planned for the railway network have increased the demand for work in the Engineering area.

Recently, Infra SA announced that it will invest around R$365 million in the construction of a section of approximately 140 kilometers of the West-East Integration Railway (Fiol). The tender proposal for hiring engineering services in lots 5FB and 5FC has already been opened.

The projection is that 70% of the works on section II, which connects Caetité to Barreiras, will be completed in 2024. It is considered of great importance for cargo transport and consequently for regional development.

The work, led by Infra SA, involves a railway bridge over the São Francisco River, which, when put into operation, will be considered the largest and most important in Latin America.

“There are still some small difficulties in relation to section II of Fiol. However, the implementation project has already been fully drawn up and defined. I do not believe that there will be any further changes or obstacles to its implementation, both archaeological and environmental”, says civil engineer specializing in railways and consultant in transport logistics, Rafael Vasconcellos.

“As for the bridge, the main part is already ready. I think all that remains is to install the railway grid, ballast, rail and sleeper, which form the so-called superstructure. It tends to be a quick thing,” he adds.

All works are monitored by the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy in the State of Bahia (Crea-BA). “The expansion of the railway network in Bahia is urgent and fundamental for the development of the state, generating jobs and boosting the local economy”, says the president of the Council, Joseval Carqueija.

The works to expand Bahia’s railway network should bring immense benefits to various segments of society, mainly the local agricultural sector, as the railway is part of the export corridors.

“The gains for the agricultural sector should be large, especially if greater port investments are added to the works on the railway network. Between the Island of Itaparica and the mainland within Bahia de Todos os Santos, for example, there is an extremely promising region for the creation of deep-draft ports, large loads and shipowners”, comments Rafael, highlighting the importance of the Port of Enseada.
