Monkey enters supermarket in São Francisco do Sul, SC

A monkey entered a supermarket for two days in a row in São Francisco do Sul, in the north of Santa Catarina. The animal drank beer, ate pine nuts and even picked up a razor blade. He was apprehended, according to the city’s Operations and Rescue Group (GOR), and didn’t get hurt.

The animal is a male black capuchin monkey, according to GOR biologist Carlos Rocha. He is registered, but his rabies vaccine was late. The tutor lives close to the supermarket.

Firstly, the monkey, called Chico, entered the supermarket, in the Rocio Grande neighborhood, on Saturday (20). The GOR was called around 6:30 pm.

“He consumed pine nuts, opened bags of powdered milk, jars of tomato paste and even opened and drank several cans of beer, not consuming them all,” said the coordinator of the GOR of São Francisco do Sul, Wesley Henrique Medeiros.

The GOR was called to collect the animal. The tutor was in the supermarket and was identified.

“The animal was registered with Ibama [Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis] and the tutor had the documentation. The animal was even microchipped. As a result, the Military Police were called, who were present and carried out a detailed investigation due to failure to exercise caution when guarding the animal”, explained the coordinator.

On Saturday itself, the GOR was unable to capture the monkey, which was scared. “He ended up returning home alone on Saturday night, after the market closed,” reported Medeiros.

However, the monkey returned to the site the next day, in the morning. At around 8:30 am, the GOR was called again by supermarket employees.

This time, the team managed to make the capture. “In view of the fact that it happened again, the Military Police seized the animal, together with the GOR”, said Medeiros.

According to him, the owner knew that the animal was in the supermarket, but showed no interest in picking it up. Therefore, the seizure was made.

Therefore, the monkey was sent to the Wild Animal Screening Center, in Florianópolis, a city about 180 kilometers south of São Francisco do Sul.

The GOR coordinator explained that the animal is registered and the owner showed interest in recovering it after the seizure. Now the man needs to file a lawsuit and await a court decision on custody of the monkey.

The GOR has an agreement with the municipality to rescue animals and monitor abuse.
