The artwork for the current champion of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival will be chosen through a cultural competition promoted by Viradouro in partnership with the Northern Metropolitan Education Regional Management, of the State Department of Education of Pernambuco. Students and employees from the 96 schools covered by the Regional Management that have technical Visual Art courses, located in the cities of Abreu e Lima, Araçoiaba, Igarassu, Ilha de Itamaracá, Itapissuma, Olinda and Paulista, can participate.

The idea of promoting the competition with artists from Pernambuco came about because carnival artist Tarcísio Zanon was inspired by the relationship between João Batista, Malunguinho, and the State. The Afro-indigenous entity emerged in the mid-19th century in the region and led the Quilombo Catucá.

Starting this Thursday, interested parties can send their creations to email [email protected], with the deadline for submitting competing works being May 15th. Also this Thursday, a video will be published on Viradouro’s social networks in which carnival artist Tarcísio Zanon will give some guidance to candidates.

“I believe in the cultural integration that this competition will promote. The Viradouro poster will highlight the artist’s work from Pernambuco, who lives in the same region where the main character of our plot lived”, says the carnival artist.

Technician in Promotion of Racial and Ethnic-Racial Equality and working in the Pernambuco Regional Education Management, professor João Monteiro, is optimistic about the results of the partnership with Viradouro.

“I believe the competition will be received with great enthusiasm. Students, staff and their communities are familiar with the programs implemented by GRE and the relationships with cultural diversity. Recife and the Metropolitan Region have wide cultural diversity and samba is part of this cultural melting pot”, concludes the professor.

The name of the winner, whose prize will be the right to parade at Viradouro in 2025, will be announced on May 25th. The chosen art will be printed on all products created by the school relating to the plot of the next parade, such as banners, t-shirts and caps, for example. All contest rules will be available on the website www.viradouro.com.br.
