Group of visually impaired people visit inclusive museum in Blumenau

In Blumenau, in Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina, a free museum that tells the history of industry and fashion in Santa Catarina has been adapted for people with visual impairments.

The adaptations for visual accessibility made at the Hering Museum include the tactile floor, to facilitate the journey, writing in Braille and sculptures and objects that can be touched, so that people can get an idea of machines, buildings and photos from the collection.

Gilberto Correia, 69 years old, is retired and cannot see. He was one of the members of the group of visually impaired people who visited the museum after the adaptations.

“Today, seeing it through your hands is super difficult, but at the same time, it’s super exciting. I can say that it’s all good, that they also thought about inclusion. Here at this exact moment I feel totally included”, says Gilberto.

According to Josiane Graziela da Silva, who is the manager of the Hermann Hering Foundation, the museum was created in 2010 and has long sought to be inclusive.

“Being able to visit this space independently, feel what the museum is like, with the photos and objects. For us it is very gratifying, because we managed to achieve our objective, which is to include these people in the community”, says Josiane.

The museum captures the trajectory of the Hering family, also highlighting the work of its employees, the evolution of machines, fabrics and products developed in the industry.

Another person who was in the visiting group was Roseli Santos, who is a former employee of this company and lost her sight two years ago.

“I’m here smelling the cotton that I used to work in the spinning mill. Feeling inclusion, because those of us who don’t have the vision need a lot of space, all the spaces. Because we don’t have a vision, but we have the right to come and go,” she says.

O Museum is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. It is located at Rua Hermann Hering, 1740 – Bom Retiro in Blumenau. Entry is free.
